Delicate fine line bird tattoo on ribs - first tattoo inspiration at XOXO Dublin

First Timers • March 2026

So you’ve decided to get your first tattoo. You’ve probably been thinking about it for weeks — maybe months. You’ve saved Pinterest boards, zoomed in on Instagram photos, and asked friends about their experiences.

But you still have questions. Does it hurt? How much will it cost? What if I pick the wrong design?

Relax. Getting your first tattoo in Dublin should be exciting, not stressful. This guide covers everything you need to know — from choosing your design to walking out of the studio with fresh ink and a big smile.

The Honest Guide

Choosing Your First Design

The biggest question first-timers face isn’t about pain or price — it’s “what should I get?” And the honest answer is: there’s no wrong answer, as long as you genuinely love it.

Start Simple

For a first tattoo, most people go smaller and simpler. A fine line symbol, a meaningful word, a small floral design, or a minimal illustration. There’s nothing wrong with starting small — you can always add more later. Many of our clients at XOXO started with a tiny wrist piece and now have full sleeves.

Bring References and Inspiration

Save images that inspire you — screenshots from Instagram, Pinterest boards, photos of tattoos you love. These help your artist understand the style, mood, and direction you’re going for. The more references you bring, the easier it is for your artist to create something that feels exactly right for you.

Don’t Rush the Decision

If you’ve wanted something for six months and still love it, that’s a good sign. If you thought of it last night after three pints, maybe sleep on it. A tattoo is permanent — give the idea time to breathe.

💡 Not Sure What You Want?

That’s completely fine. Book a free consultation at XOXO and talk it through with one of our artists. They’ll help you refine your idea, suggest sizing and placement, and make sure you’re confident before committing. No pressure, no obligation.

Where Should You Get Your First Tattoo?

Placement matters — both for how the tattoo looks and how it feels. For a first tattoo, we generally recommend areas that are:

  • Lower pain — outer forearm, upper arm, shoulder, or outer thigh
  • Easy to see — so you can admire your new ink daily
  • Easy to hide — if you need to cover it for work
  • Flat and smooth — easier for the artist and better results

The inner forearm is the most popular spot for first tattoos at XOXO. It’s relatively low pain, looks great, and can be covered with a long sleeve when needed. The outer upper arm and ankle are also popular first-timer choices.

We’d recommend saving the ribs, spine, fingers, and sternum for later — they’re more painful and better suited to people who already know what to expect. For a full breakdown, check our tattoo pain guide.

Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt?

Yes — but probably not as much as you’re imagining.

The sensation is most often described as a persistent scratching — like a cat scratch being slowly drawn across your skin. It’s uncomfortable but very manageable, especially on the less sensitive areas we recommend for first-timers.

The anxiety beforehand is almost always worse than the reality. We can’t count the number of first-timers who’ve sat down at XOXO looking nervous and left saying “is that it?”

Most of our first-time clients tell us the same thing afterwards: “I was so nervous, but it was way more manageable than I expected.” The build-up is always the hardest part.

Tips for Managing the Discomfort

Eat a proper meal 1-2 hours before your appointment — low blood sugar makes everything feel worse
Stay hydrated in the days leading up
Get a good night’s sleep the night before
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before — it thins your blood and increases pain sensitivity
Bring headphones — music or a podcast is a brilliant distraction
Breathe — tensing up makes it worse, so focus on staying relaxed

What to Expect on the Day

Walking into a tattoo studio for the first time can feel intimidating. Here’s exactly what happens so there are no surprises:

1. You Arrive

Come on time or a few minutes early. Bring valid photo ID (you must be 18+), your reference images on your phone, and snacks/water if your session is over an hour.

2. Design Review

Your artist will show you the design they’ve prepared. You’ll discuss sizing, placement, and any final tweaks. Nothing is permanent until you say yes — this is your chance to adjust anything.

3. Stencil Application

The artist applies a temporary stencil to your skin so you can see exactly how the tattoo will look and where it sits. You can check it in the mirror, move it, resize it — whatever you need.

4. Tattooing

Once you approve the stencil, the tattooing begins. Your artist will check in with you regularly and offer breaks if needed. A small first tattoo typically takes 30 minutes to an hour.

5. Wrapping and Aftercare

When it’s done, your artist cleans the area, applies a protective wrap, and walks you through the aftercare instructions. You pay the balance (minus your deposit) and you’re done.

How Much Does a First Tattoo Cost?

Most first tattoos fall in the €80 – €250 range, depending on size and complexity. A small fine line piece on the wrist might be €80-€120. A medium custom design on the forearm could be €150-€300.

At XOXO, our minimum charge is €80. This covers all sterilisation, setup, and materials — even for the smallest piece.

💰 Deposits

We require a deposit to book your appointment. It’s fully deductible from the final price — so you’re not paying extra. If you need to reschedule, just give us 72 hours notice and we’ll move your appointment at no cost.

Looking After Your New Tattoo

Aftercare is just as important as the tattoo itself. The first 2-3 weeks determine how your tattoo looks for the rest of your life. The basics:

✓ Leave the wrap on for as long as your artist recommends
✓ Wash gently with fragrance-free soap, pat dry with clean paper towel
✓ Apply a thin layer of aftercare cream (Bepanthen or similar)
✓ Don’t scratch, pick, or peel flaking skin
✓ No swimming, baths, or soaking for 2-3 weeks
✓ Keep it out of direct sunlight while healing

Your XOXO artist will give you detailed aftercare instructions on the day. We also offer a free touch-up on every tattoo if needed once healed. Read our full aftercare guide for the complete day-by-day breakdown.

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

Going Too Small

It sounds counterintuitive, but going too small can be a mistake. Very tiny tattoos (under 2cm) with lots of detail tend to blur together over time. Your artist will advise on the right size for your design — trust their experience.

Choosing a Studio Based on Price Alone

A cheap tattoo is rarely a good tattoo. This is something you’ll have on your body for decades. The difference between a €60 tattoo and a €120 tattoo is often the difference between something you regret and something you love. Read our guide on choosing the right studio.

Not Eating Beforehand

More first-timers feel faint from low blood sugar than from pain. Eat a proper meal. Bring a snack. Stay hydrated. Your body will thank you.

Overthinking It

Some people research for years and never pull the trigger. At some point, you just have to go for it. Pick a studio you trust, pick a design you love, and book. You’ll wonder why you waited so long.

The best advice we give first-timers: pick something you love, choose a studio you trust, eat a good breakfast, and enjoy the experience. It’s meant to be fun — and it will be.

FAQ

First Tattoo FAQs

How old do I need to be to get a tattoo in Dublin?

You must be 18 years old with valid photo ID. No exceptions — this is an industry-wide standard in Ireland.

How long does a small first tattoo take?

Most small first tattoos take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Medium pieces might take 1-2 hours. Your artist will give you a time estimate when you book.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes — one friend is welcome for support. We ask that you limit it to one guest to keep the studio calm for everyone.

What if I change my mind about the design?

You’ll see the design and stencil before any tattooing begins. If you want changes, your artist will adjust it. If you decide not to go ahead, that’s completely fine — no judgement. Your deposit may not be refundable, but your comfort always comes first.

Will my first tattoo fade quickly?

A well-done tattoo with proper aftercare will look great for years. Some fading is natural over time (especially with sun exposure), but quality ink and technique mean your first tattoo should hold up beautifully. At XOXO, we include a free touch-up if any areas need refreshing after healing.

Do you do walk-ins for first tattoos?

Yes — walk-ins are welcome at XOXO when we have availability. Flash designs and smaller pieces are ideal for walk-ins. For custom work, we recommend booking in advance so your artist has time to prepare your design.
