Cover-up tattoo transformation at XOXO Tattoo Studio Dublin

Cover-Ups • April 2026

We’ve all seen one — maybe in the mirror. A tattoo that made sense at 18 but doesn’t at 28. A name that shouldn’t be there anymore. A piece that just didn’t turn out the way you hoped.

The good news? You don’t have to live with it. Cover-up tattoos are one of the most requested services at tattoo studios across Dublin, and when done by a skilled artist, the old tattoo disappears completely beneath a new piece you actually love.

This guide explains everything about cover-up tattoos — how they work, what’s possible, what to expect, and how to get the best result at XOXO Tattoo Studio in Dublin.

Fresh Start

What Is a Cover-Up Tattoo?

A cover-up is a new tattoo designed specifically to conceal an existing tattoo. The new design is tattooed directly over the old one, using darker tones, strategic shading, and clever composition to hide what’s underneath.

It’s not about slapping something bigger on top and hoping for the best. A good cover-up requires an artist who understands how ink layers interact, how healed tattoos sit in the skin, and how to design something that works both as a standalone piece and as a disguise for what’s beneath it.

Cover-ups are part art, part problem-solving — and the best cover-up artists treat them as a creative challenge, not just a correction.

What Can Be Covered Up?

Almost anything — but some tattoos are easier to cover than others:

Easier to Cover

Small, faded tattoos — less ink to work around, more design options
Light or single-colour tattoos — grey, light blue, or faded black give the most flexibility
Simple designs — basic shapes, thin lines, small script
Old tattoos — ink that has softened and faded over years is much easier to cover

Harder to Cover (But Still Possible)

Large, dark tattoos — heavy black saturation limits what can go on top
Coloured tattoos — reds, oranges, and yellows are harder to mask than blues and greys
Recent tattoos — fresh, bold ink with strong saturation needs more work to cover
Large tribal or blackwork — possible but requires a very experienced artist and usually a larger new piece

How Does a Cover-Up Work?

Step 1: Not always necessary, but highly recommended Consultation

This is important step. You’ll meet with your artist, show them the existing tattoo (in person or via photo), and discuss what you’d like instead. Your artist will assess the old tattoo’s size, colour, darkness, and placement, then suggest design directions that will work as a cover-up.

Step 2: Design

Your artist creates a custom design specifically built around the old tattoo. This isn’t a standard design — it’s engineered to work with (and conceal) what’s already there. The darkest elements of the new design are strategically placed over the most visible parts of the old tattoo.

Step 3: Tattooing

The new tattoo is applied directly over the old one. Cover-up sessions can take longer than a standard tattoo of the same size because the artist needs to work more ink into the skin and build up layers to fully conceal the old piece.

Step 4: Healing

Cover-ups follow the same aftercare process as any tattoo. Once fully healed, the old tattoo should be completely invisible beneath the new design.

What Makes a Great Cover-Up Design?

The best cover-up designs share a few key qualities:

Larger than the original — the new piece needs to extend beyond the edges of the old tattoo to fully conceal it
Strategic use of dark tones — darker shading and solid black areas are placed directly over the heaviest parts of the old tattoo
Organic, flowing shapes — florals, animals, and nature-based designs work brilliantly because their organic shapes can wrap around and absorb irregular old tattoo shapes
Depth and dimension — designs with layers, shading, and visual depth hide old ink better than flat, outline-based designs
Designed for the specific old tattoo — a generic design pasted over old ink rarely works. The best cover-ups are custom-designed specifically for what’s underneath

The best cover-up is one where nobody can tell it’s a cover-up. When someone looks at your arm and sees a beautiful tattoo — not a correction, not a compromise, just a great piece of art — that’s the goal.

Best Styles for Cover-Ups

Colour Work

The boldest option for transforming old tattoos. Vibrant pigments, strong saturation, and clever colour layering allow the artist to disguise unwanted ink while creating something completely new. Floral pieces, Japanese designs, neo-traditional work, animals, and detailed custom concepts all look incredible in colour.

Black and Grey Realism

The king of cover-ups. The wide tonal range — from solid blacks through soft greys — gives the artist maximum ability to hide old ink. Portraits, animals, skulls, and atmospheric designs all work brilliantly. Check our black and grey gallery for inspiration.

Floral and Botanical

Flowers, leaves, and botanical compositions are naturally organic in shape, making them perfect for wrapping around and absorbing irregular old tattoo shapes. Dark petals and dense foliage provide excellent coverage.

Japanese and Oriental

Dragons, koi, waves, and cherry blossoms — Japanese designs use bold contrast and flowing compositions that are ideal for covering larger old pieces. The style naturally fills space and uses dark backgrounds effectively.

Blackwork and Neo-Traditional

Bold lines and solid fill can mask almost anything underneath. If you’re open to a darker, bolder aesthetic, blackwork and neo-traditional designs offer some of the most effective cover-up options.

Do You Need Laser Removal First?

Not always — but sometimes it helps.

If your old tattoo is light, small, or faded, a skilled artist can usually cover it directly without any laser sessions. But if it’s very dark, large, or heavily saturated, a few sessions of laser fading can lighten it enough to give your cover-up artist much more design freedom.

Laser fading (not full removal) typically takes 2-4 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. You don’t need to remove the old tattoo completely — just lighten it enough that the cover-up artist has more flexibility. We can advise on whether laser would benefit your specific situation during a consultation.

💰 Cover-Up Pricing

Cover-ups are priced the same way as any custom tattoo — based on size, detail, and time. They can sometimes cost slightly more than a standard piece of the same size because of the additional design complexity and layering required. Most cover-ups at XOXO range from €200 to €690+ depending on the project. A consultation will give you an accurate quote.

Choosing a Cover-Up Artist in Dublin

Cover-ups require a specific skillset that not every tattoo artist has. When choosing a cover-up artist, look for:

Before and after photos — any artist who does cover-ups should have clear before/after examples in their portfolio
Experience with your type of old tattoo — covering a small faded piece is very different from covering a large dark tribal
Honest assessment — a good cover-up artist will tell you honestly what’s possible and what isn’t
Custom design approach — every cover-up should be custom-designed for the specific old tattoo

At XOXO, our artists have extensive experience with cover-up work across all styles. Book a consultation and we’ll match you with the right artist for your project.

FAQ

Cover-Up Tattoo FAQs

Can any tattoo be covered up?

Almost any tattoo can be covered or significantly improved. Very dark, large, or heavily saturated tattoos may need laser fading first to give the cover-up artist more options. A consultation will tell you exactly what’s possible for your specific tattoo.

Will the old tattoo show through?

When done by an experienced artist, no. The whole point of a cover-up is that the old tattoo becomes completely invisible. A skilled artist will ensure no trace is visible.

Does a cover-up tattoo hurt more?

It can feel slightly more intense because the artist is working over an area that already has ink and potentially some scar tissue. But the difference is minor — most people report it feels very similar to a standard tattoo.

How big does the cover-up need to be?

The new design typically needs to be at least 30-50% larger than the old tattoo to fully conceal it. Your artist will advise on the minimum size during the consultation.

How long does a cover-up take?

Longer than a standard tattoo of the same size — usually 1.5x to 2x the time. A medium cover-up might take 2-4 hours, larger projects may need multiple sessions.

Can you cover a name tattoo?

Yes — name tattoos are one of the most common cover-up requests. Names are usually small with thin lines, making them relatively easy to cover with the right design.
